At Skyhawks-SuperTots Colorado, your child’s safety is always our top priority. We believe in creating a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment where kids can grow, not just as athletes, but as confident, healthy individuals. And while we’re all about high-fives, having fun, and celebrating every goal, we also take safety very seriously.

That’s why all our coaches complete First Aid and CPR training and stay up-to-date on important safety topics, like concussion awareness. Because knowing how to prevent, recognize, and respond to a concussion isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.

What Is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or a hit to the body that causes the head to move rapidly. That movement can affect brain function, and while some symptoms appear immediately, others may take hours or even days to develop.

How We Help Keep Kids Safe.

Our coaches are trained to:

  • Create a culture of safety and sportsmanship, where rough or unsafe play is never allowed.
  • Set expectations tied to Life Skills like Respect, Teamwork and Sportsmanship, and to follow through when these expectations are not being met.
  • Teach proper techniques that reduce the risk of injury.
  • Monitor for signs of concussion and act quickly if something doesn’t seem right.
  • Encourage kids to speak up if they’re hurt. We let them know it’s brave to ask for help and that their health always comes first.

What Happens Next?

If we suspect a concussion:

  • We’ll immediately remove the child from play.
  • Parents will be contacted and provided with all the necessary details and resources.
  • We’ll ask for written clearance from a healthcare provider before your child returns to camp or class.
  • We’ll be cheering your child on every step of the way as they recover!

Even if it seems minor, we follow the rule: When in doubt, sit them out!

Signs of a Possible Concussion

If your child ever takes a fall or bump to the head, here’s what to watch for:

Signs you might notice:

  • Appears dazed or confused
  • Moves clumsily or has trouble answering questions
  • Can’t remember what happened just before or after the injury
  • Mood, behavior, or personality changes

What your child might say or experience:

  • “I have a headache” or “my head feels weird.”
  • Nausea or dizziness
  • Blurry vision or sensitivity to light/noise
  • Feeling foggy, tired, or not quite right

Returning to activity after a concussion is a gradual process, and we’ll work with you and your healthcare provider as needed to make sure it’s done safely.

Let’s Work Together

Preventing concussions is a team effort. You can help by encouraging your child to play safely, wear appropriate gear, and let a coach or adult know if something doesn’t feel right.

We’re here to help your child grow, learn, and have fun safely. We believe that the best memories are those made when kids feel confident, supported, and cared for.
